Why are periods still called the “curse”?

Irene O'Connor May 6th, 2008

I recently heard an advertisement for tampons or menstruation pain relief. I heard the term “curse” used and I was amazed that empowered women that we are today still feel we are “cursed. This means to me that those that market to us want to remind us how un-empowered we are once a month. Do you believe this to be true? Are we still passing this less than female imagery to the on-going generations?

Marketing is all about research now a days. This means that a test group responded and identified with women receiving a “curse” once a month for the simple reason of being female. Then then lead to marketing strategies for success. Are successful women examples of over-coming a curse? Do we regard successful women and easily identify with them?

I embraced menstruation as a blessing because once a month I was able to look at life and vent what I was dissatisfied about. Menstruation gave me the right, I believe, to express myself because I could no longer hold in my “unacceptable” emotions. I felt empowered and special because men did not have a “cause” to create this reflection.

There is a great book called the “Red Tent” written by Anita Diamant. In the book the writer describes the honored tradition of spending time in the red tent during menstruation. Initially I felt enraged that girls/ women, were outcast. I followed the story and understood it was a time of honoring, honoring ones women-hood and a time to detach and reflect and experience ones self.

I suggest we re-emphasize this meaning to menstruation and empower ourselves for experiencing our selves for what we are here on earth. Enjoy the experience and leave the “curse” mentality behind, outcast that thought!

Does Your Soul Have A Cold? A Review by Irene O’Connor

Irene O'Connor May 5th, 2008

“Does Your Soul Have A Cold?” is the title of a documentary released in 2007. It is the story of several Japanese men and women having being diagnosed as depressed and their treatment with anti-depressants.

The documentary definitely was spun for the purpose of criticizing the pharmaceutical companies that went after an untapped market. The premise of the documentary is that in 1999 commercials started appearing on television and in print “educating” Japanese citizens about being sad for over one month meant you were a depressed individual.

The sales campaign from Glaxo Smith Kline, in the documentary, is blamed for creating an atmosphere of hypochondria with its appeal to solving your “sadness” problem and giving you back your life. The documentary follows the stories of eight men and women varying in ages of 20’s to 30’s. Some of them tell of their childhoods and in retrospect seeing they had been depressed for a very long time.

I found it interesting that only one individual actually was in treatment with a counselor. One gentleman went to a daycare for consistency in his life with others like himself who had been hospitalized because of their depression. There were a few scenes with the parents and co-workers of the individuals, none supporting the diagnosis of depression. The individuals represented in the documentary definitely support the theory of the director and producer that the only one succeeding in mental health is the pharmaceutical companies.

I was attracted to watch the documentary because of the title involving the word “soul”. The concept that a soul was ill and needed treatment intrigued me. The last thing addressed was the souls of the individuals. The soul was not represented at all since all concerned in the presentation were definitely materialistic in their manner of seeing the world. Their perspective adds to their suffering.

I do believe that we need to take a look at the perspective that our beliefs would support an “ill” soul. What definition do we have for “soul”. Spiritually speaking the soul is our connection to our divinity and the ego creates the belief that our soul is “ill”. The soul communicates through feelings. The mind/ego has many issues with our allowing, experiencing and believing our feelings. The ego/mind goes after devaluing our feeling and emotions. Depression diagnosed by the medical community treats the situation with “balancing” our emotions so that there are less extremes. Isn’t it our culture that defines our emotions as “too extreme? I suggest exploring this concept of the situation and move away from blame of the treatment offered by the allopathic community.

Spiritually speaking our souls don’t have colds, our minds do!
