Why are periods still called the “curse”?

I recently heard an advertisement for tampons or menstruation pain relief. I heard the term “curse” used and I was amazed that empowered women that we are today still feel we are “cursed. This means to me that those that market to us want to remind us how un-empowered we are once a month. Do you believe this to be true? Are we still passing this less than female imagery to the on-going generations?
Marketing is all about research now a days. This means that a test group responded and identified with women receiving a “curse” once a month for the simple reason of being female. Then then lead to marketing strategies for success. Are successful women examples of over-coming a curse? Do we regard successful women and easily identify with them?
I embraced menstruation as a blessing because once a month I was able to look at life and vent what I was dissatisfied about. Menstruation gave me the right, I believe, to express myself because I could no longer hold in my “unacceptable” emotions. I felt empowered and special because men did not have a “cause” to create this reflection.
There is a great book called the “Red Tent” written by Anita Diamant. In the book the writer describes the honored tradition of spending time in the red tent during menstruation. Initially I felt enraged that girls/ women, were outcast. I followed the story and understood it was a time of honoring, honoring ones women-hood and a time to detach and reflect and experience ones self.
I suggest we re-emphasize this meaning to menstruation and empower ourselves for experiencing our selves for what we are here on earth. Enjoy the experience and leave the “curse” mentality behind, outcast that thought!
